Care and Cleaning of Down Comforters
Down Comforter Care (Executive Summary by Terry Edwards)
How should you clean your down comforter when it does get dirty ? Here are some quick tips.
1. Read the care labels on your down comforter. Many comforters will need to be dry cleaned only, while others may be cleaned in the washing machine. You will avoid possibly destroying your comforter in the washer.
2. Home dry cleaning products may work. There are several home dry cleaning products that work well in cleaning a bed comforter.
3. Don’t clean a down comforter more than 1-2 times a year. More frequent cleaning can damage the down and shorten the life span.
4. When washing your down comforter in the washing machine, wait for 2 minutes before adding the comforter to the washer. Rinse the comforter at least twice before removing.
5. For drying a down comforter you want to add the comforter to the dryer at the same time.
How to Clean a Down Comforters (Executive Summary by Emma Bisenbitz)
Cleaning your down comforters will keep it feeling new, soft and comfortable. When it comes to comforter care, you have a few cleaning options.
1. Dry Cleaning – It’s the most expensive way to clean your down comforters, but with dry cleaning, you can avoid a hernia caused by lifting a forty-pound blanket into the washer. Dry cleaning is your safest bet. But keep in mind it costs approximately $25 to clean a comforter down. Read its special care instructions. Some down comforter manufacturers will list dry cleaning as your only option. Some will say not to dry clean your comforters sets at all. Reading the instructions can prevent a down comforters disaster.
2. Washing It Yourself – Save a few bucks by washing your bedding at home. Wash your down comforters only when necessary – washing sometimes damages the down clusters and strips them of their natural oils.
3. Avoid Liquid Detergent – Standard liquid detergents use wax in their formulas, which can cause down feathers to bunch together. Instead, there are special mild detergents made for cleaning bedding comforters. Don’t forget to spot-treat any stains before you wash.
4. Fluff Your Bedding Comforter in the Wash – Set the washing machine on delicate and allow the water and mild detergent to mix before placing the comforter inside.
By following these tips you should have no difficulty in cleaning your comforter sets and keeping it looking new for years to come.
